Who Qualifies For An Insulation Grant?

Sounds great but just who qualifies for an insulation grant? Well, if you own your own home, are privately renting (you must have permission of the landlord) or are a landlord with a tenant who meets the criteria then you may qualify for an insulation grant under the ECO4 scheme.

Social housing tenants could potentially qualify but the rules are somewhat different and it is up to the council or housing association as to whether you can obtain the grant.

Under ECO4 the rules changed as to who qualifies for an insulation grant.

There is now a larger emphasis on applicants having a property that has an EPC rating of D, E, F or G. Energy companies can only spend 15% of their funding on D rated properties so for this reason only applicants of E, F and G are likely to be accepted.

If you live in a property with an EPC rating of A, B or C then you will not qualify for the insulation grant.

If you are unsure about your EPC rating then you can view this on the governments EPC register.

Am I Eligible For a Free Insulation Grant?

To be eligible for a loft insulation grant, cavity wall insulation grant, external and internal wall insulation grant, a solid wall insulation grant or a room in roof insulation grant you will have two main considerations to determine if you are likely to qualify for an insulation grant and whether your property is suitable to have insulation installed.

You must be in receipt of the below qualifying benefits from the government.

Pension Credit Guarantee Credit

Income-based jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)

Child Tax Credit

Income Support

Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)

Working tax credit

Universal Credit

Grants are available to cover the entire cost of the process and are available to homeowners who are receiving income related benefits, disability related benefits or tax credits. The property must be owned or be rented from a private landlord and must not be a council/house association.

The Types of Insulation Grants Available Under ECO4 & GBIS

The ECO4 scheme offers several types of insulation to help improve your home’s energy efficiency:

1. Loft Insulation: Reduces heat loss through the roof by adding a layer of insulation material. This can save up to £280 a year on energy bills.

2. Cavity Wall Insulation: Involves filling the gap between exterior walls with insulation to reduce heat loss. In some cases, the scheme also covers the removal and replacement of old or damp cavity wall insulation.

3. External Wall Insulation: (EWI) is one of the key insulation options available under the ECO4 scheme. This type of insulation involves adding a layer of insulation material to the exterior walls of a property, which is then covered with a protective and decorative finish.

4. Internal Wall Insulation: (IWI) is another effective energy-saving measure available under the ECO4 scheme. This insulation is applied to the inside walls of your home, particularly beneficial for properties with solid walls that cannot accommodate cavity insulation.

These insulation options are designed to make homes more energy-efficient, reduce heating costs, and lower carbon emissions.
